"Real Music"

"Real Music" is a phrase that gets chucked around an awful lot, more often than not, although not exclusively and certainly not always, by rock/indie/alternative bands and their fans. And it's normally aimed towards more hip hop and dance records which angers me greatly. Surely if it's music, it's music- why dispute about the legitimacy?!

I guess what really influenced me to write this post (I'm writing this much earlier than you'll be reading it), is there's very recently been a bit of an uproar about Kanye West headlining Glastonbury on the Saturday- told you this post was written a while ago ^.^ It was described a "an outrage" and "disgusting" which, sorry to be so blunt, but is absolute bollocks. Although I'm not a particularly big Kanye fan, I am a rational human being and am able to understand that he is a music artist- and Glastonbury is a music festival. Plus, if you're not happy about spending your money on an artist you don't like, don't watch him... Why, instead of complaining about Kanye West, don't you go and get your moneys worth out of watching The Who or Florence and the Machine instead of boasting your ignorant opinion around, regarding a situation you cannot change. Or, even go and give him a chance! You never know, he might surprise you.

I just find it very shallow, close-minded and pigheaded of those people who think if they don't appreciate a certain style of music, it isn't "real". Music is music- despite the genre. No one is forcing you to listen to something you don't like. To put it into a simpler analogy- I don't like mushrooms, but if I order a side of vegetables in a restaurant (which rarely happens- always choose the carbs) and that vegetable bowl contains mushrooms, I'm not going to demand a refund on my entire meal- because mushrooms are as much a vegetable as Kanye is a music artist. I simply choose to eat the rest of the meal and leave the mushrooms untouched. Just because I don't like mushrooms, it doesn't mean they should be removed from the vegetable bowl and ruin everyone else's enjoyment. Neither does it mean they aren't "real" food. They're just not for me.

Do you understand yet? I hope so.

Let me know your thoughts and opinions on this. And what analogy you'd use, instead of my mushroom one...

Cheerio! Xxx

  2. Yes, yes, yes! I get so annoyed when anyone refers to any type of music as 'not real music'! I'm not really a fan of a lot of chart music but I still respect the fact that these people are musicians and therefore make music.
I listen to a lot of alternative music and I've been told by a lot of people that it's not 'real music' or 'good music' just because it isn't their personal taste. It's actually quite upsetting sometimes.
I think people just need to learn that there are lots of different genres of music and we should all just respect the music, the musicians and the fans :)

    1. YES! Even if you don't personally prefer it, it's just disrespectful to disregard it as music <3

  3. I love all music, I can literally jam out to anything. I agree All music is 'real music' it's music that you can hear created by someone. Sometimes I feel like people should lighten up and actually explore new music.

  5. Love this post!! so true <3 the only think that does sometimes annoy me is artists who never write their own music to me an "artist" should write their own music!! but as long as those listening like it that is all that matters!!

    1. yeah, I get what you're saying. But at the same time, singing is an art so technically they are artists? There should definitely be more recognition for those who write the songs though x x x
